Dalmore Heathrow
The Brief
We were commissioned to develop travel retail fixtures for Dalmore Whisky in conjunction with The Fletcher Project. The project would involve developing a range of fixtures to include wall bays, gondolas, gondola ends and glorifiers. The material palate was luxurious with impressive and indulgent lighting and hero sections. We were responsible for providing technical development drawings and submission documentation in order obtain airport approval prior to being handed over to production houses.
Project Challenges
There were many challenges to translate this all into an effective and seamless solution, from the cantilevered floating shelves to the impressive and luxurious lighting haloing the entire display. Developed as a mixture of joinery, glass and fabricated steel assemblies the display had to conform to the rigorous regulations required in order to be approved by the airport. With our many years of experience designing fixtures for the travel retail sector, Step2 Design delivered on time and within budget.
The lighting and cabling were very challenging to integrate in a discrete yet sophisticated way. Using metal profiles to create a seamless framework onto which the red LED lighting could be mechanically fixed, with additional diffusion to ensure an even glow shining onto the satin aluminium facing. The brand logo and crest were laser cut stainless parts bonded to glass, which were screen printed to the rear and fitted with an obliterator, allowing the light to halo around the logo and crest – giving it a floating appearance. The cantilevered shelving had to both uplight and downlight product areas, and even the glass shelving had a LED downlighting fixed to the front. The wall bay had to have accessible drivers and electrics with RCD isolation, ensuring the fixture would conform to airport regulations.
